In the 1930s, Joseph Pilates developed a series of exercises on the Mat and other equipment he invented. Pilates called his method Contrology(from control and Greek -λογία, -logia) because he believed that his method used the mind to control the muscles. The Pilates method seeks to increase the strength, flexibility, and control of the body.
As our understanding of the Body, Mind, and its connection with Spirit increases, classical Pilates still holds its ground and has bloomed into a place where many Contemporary Pilates approaches integrate advances in science, physical therapy, and physical medicine. The Pilates “powerhouse” stabilizes the alignment of our vital energy centers along the spine which brings life and vitality as stability, movement, and energy are allowed to flow freely and in a balanced way.
Dr. Pearson-Nunez specialized in adapting the Method of Pilates to meet your personal physical condition whether a novice, athlete, or post-rehabilitation(recommended and with approval from your physician/PT/OT). Dr. Pearson-Nunez can even work in conjunction with your physician to customize an at-home session to meet your need.
Pilates has benefits for all, and can be found as a great tool for Return to Health!
Joseph Pilates once famously said, “In ten sessions you’ll feel the difference, in twenty you’ll see the difference, and in thirty you’ll have a whole new body.” Everyone is different, but most clients start to notice positive changes relatively quickly. Your dedication to a consistent practice will greatly determine how quickly you advance. A consistent program (2-3 sessions per week) will significantly improve posture and alignment, enhancing stamina, coordination, strength and flexibility.
If you’re injured, it’s important to seek treatment from a physician and/or a physical therapist. Pilates can help in the recovery process (and prevent future injuries from occurring) through correcting muscular imbalances and movement patterns. In addition, the central focus on core stabilization can improve performance in all activities.
No matter where you go, you have to remember your center. You don’t do it physically, you do it mentally—do it inside. Let your mind direct your body. It’s really, really quiet. You got to know where your strong point is and as you get better, try and go to the weak point.

“The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.”
– Joseph H. Pilates, letter to clients, 1939
